Vancouver Island Road Trip Map: Best Routes + Stops

Vancouver Island looks manageable on a map.

Then you start exploring it.

One highway turns into a coastal road. A planned twenty-minute stop becomes two hours. A waterfall appears on the route. Someone tells you about a beach you have never heard of.

Suddenly the road trip becomes the destination.

This Vancouver Island road trip map guide connects some of the Island’s best routes and stops — from Nanaimo and Tofino to Victoria, Campbell River and northern Vancouver Island.

You do not have to drive all of it.

Pick a route. Leave some space. See where it takes you.

Start in Nanaimo: The Centre of the Adventure

Nanaimo is particularly useful as a Vancouver Island road-trip starting point because you can immediately travel in three completely different directions.

WEST → Tofino + Ucluelet

NORTH → Parksville + Campbell River + Northern Vancouver Island

SOUTH → Cowichan Valley + Victoria + Sooke

That means your trip does not necessarily need to be an out-and-back journey.

You can build loops, connect multiple regions or simply choose one direction and explore it properly.

ROUTE 1: Nanaimo to Tofino + Ucluelet

Nanaimo → Coombs → Cathedral Grove → Port Alberni → Sproat Lake → Ucluelet → Pacific Rim → Tofino

This is arguably Vancouver Island’s signature road trip.

Leaving Nanaimo, travel north toward Coombs before turning west onto Highway 4.

From there, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic.

Stop: Coombs

Known for its famous goats on the roof, Coombs makes an easy early stop for food, supplies and a wander before heading across the Island.

Stop: Cathedral Grove

Continue toward MacMillan Provincial Park and Cathedral Grove, where trails lead through stands of enormous old-growth trees.

It is one of the most recognizable stops along the Nanaimo-to-west-coast route.

Stop: Port Alberni

Highway 4 eventually reaches Port Alberni, positioned around the Alberni Inlet.

Fuel up, grab supplies or spend some time exploring before continuing west.

Stop: Sproat Lake

If time allows, make a detour around Sproat Lake.

Then continue toward the mountains.

Stop: Ucluelet

When you finally reach Vancouver Island’s west coast, consider going south first.

Ucluelet offers rugged coastal scenery and access to the Wild Pacific Trail.

Stop: Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

Turn north and the highway carries you through Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

Rainforest.

Pacific coastline.

Beaches that seem to keep going.

This is the Vancouver Island people imagine before they arrive.

Stop: Tofino

Eventually, the road ends in Tofino.

Surf. Beaches. Food. Forest. Sunsets. Storms.

But remember:

Tofino is the destination. The road there is half the experience.

ROUTE 2: Nanaimo to Campbell River

Nanaimo → Parksville → Qualicum Beach → Courtenay → Comox → Campbell River

Want ocean views without crossing the Island?

Head north.

This route follows Vancouver Island’s eastern side through a series of coastal communities and gives you plenty of reasons to stop.

Stop: Parksville

Just north of Nanaimo, Parksville is known for its beaches and easy access to central Vancouver Island attractions.

Explore Rathtrevor Beach or head inland toward Englishman River Falls.

Stop: Qualicum Beach

Continue north to Qualicum Beach.

The pace slows down and the coastline stays close.

Nearby, explore Little Qualicum Falls or Cameron Lake before returning to the road.

Stop: Courtenay + Comox

Farther north, the Comox Valley gives you another reason to stop.

Explore Courtenay and Comox or use the area as a base for nearby beaches, trails and mountain adventures.

Stop: Campbell River

Continue north and you reach Campbell River.

Visit Elk Falls, explore the coastline and watch for opportunities to experience the wildlife and wilderness surrounding the region.

Campbell River can be the destination.

Or it can be the beginning of your trip north.

ROUTE 3: Campbell River to Northern Vancouver Island

Campbell River → Sayward → Woss → Telegraph Cove → Port McNeill → Port Hardy

This is where the map starts opening up.

Communities become smaller.

Distances become longer.

Forests seem bigger.

And Vancouver Island begins feeling considerably more remote.

Stop: Sayward

North of Campbell River, Sayward provides access to mountains, forests and coastal scenery away from the Island’s busiest tourism areas.

Stop: Woss

Continue toward Woss, surrounded by lakes, mountains and forest.

This is the kind of Vancouver Island stop that reminds you just how much of the Island exists beyond Victoria and Tofino.

Stop: Telegraph Cove

The historic waterfront community of Telegraph Cove is one of northern Vancouver Island’s most distinctive destinations and a well-known base for marine and wildlife experiences.

Stop: Port McNeill

Nearby Port McNeill provides services and another base for exploring the surrounding region.

Stop: Port Hardy

Keep going and eventually you reach Port Hardy, near the northern end of Vancouver Island’s highway system.

If you started in Nanaimo, you have now seen an entirely different Vancouver Island.

ROUTE 4: Nanaimo to Victoria Through the Cowichan Valley

Nanaimo → Ladysmith → Chemainus → Duncan → Cowichan Valley → Malahat → Victoria

Heading south creates another completely different road trip.

Stop: Ladysmith

Just south of Nanaimo, Ladysmith makes an easy first stop along the route.

Explore the waterfront or grab coffee before continuing.

Stop: Chemainus

Next comes Chemainus, known for the large murals throughout the community.

It is exactly the kind of small-town stop that works well when you are not rushing between hotel reservations.

Stop: Cowichan Valley

Around Duncan, slow down.

The Cowichan Valley offers lakes, forests, farms, wineries, communities and outdoor recreation.

Instead of treating it as the road between Nanaimo and Victoria, make it part of the trip.

Stop: Victoria

Eventually, the route brings you into Victoria.

Explore the Inner Harbour, waterfront, neighbourhoods and surrounding coastline.

And then?

Keep going west.

ROUTE 5: Victoria to Port Renfrew

Victoria → Sooke → French Beach → Jordan River → China Beach → Port Renfrew

This route delivers a completely different southern Vancouver Island experience.

Leave Victoria behind and follow the coast toward Sooke.

Stop: Sooke

Sooke is where the city begins giving way to forests and rugged coastline.

Stock up here before continuing farther west.

Stop: French Beach

French Beach Provincial Park combines forest and ocean along the Juan de Fuca Strait.

It also makes an excellent camping stop.

Stop: Jordan River + China Beach

Continue toward Jordan River and China Beach for another dose of Vancouver Island’s wild southern coastline.

Stop: Port Renfrew

Eventually, reach Port Renfrew.

Forests, beaches and access to some of southwestern Vancouver Island’s most dramatic landscapes make this an excellent destination before turning inland.

ROUTE 6: Complete the Southern Loop

Port Renfrew → Lake Cowichan → Duncan → Nanaimo

This is where things get interesting.

Instead of driving back through Victoria, you can connect Port Renfrew with the Cowichan region and create a larger southern Vancouver Island loop.

From Port Renfrew, travel toward Lake Cowichan, then reconnect with Duncan before returning north toward Nanaimo.

Check current road conditions and services before traveling this route, particularly outside peak season.

The result is a road trip that connects:

Nanaimo → Victoria → Sooke → Port Renfrew → Lake Cowichan → Nanaimo

One loop.

Completely different landscapes.

Three Vancouver Island Road Trips From Nanaimo

If you do not have time for the entire Island, simplify it.

Nanaimo → Cathedral Grove → Ucluelet → Pacific Rim → Tofino → Nanaimo

Best for: beaches, rainforest, surfing and iconic Vancouver Island scenery.

5–7 DAYS: SOUTH ISLAND LOOP

Best for: coastal roads, communities, forests and varied scenery.

7+ DAYS: HEAD NORTH

Best for: wilderness, wildlife, longer drives and seeing a less-traveled side of Vancouver Island.

How Long Does It Take to Road Trip Vancouver Island?

Longer than the map makes you think.

That is partly because Vancouver Island is large.

But mostly?

You are going to keep stopping.

For a first trip, seven days gives you enough time to experience several regions without turning every day into a marathon.

Two weeks gives you considerably more freedom.

And even then, you will not see everything.

For a ready-made route, see our 7-Day Vancouver Island Campervan Road Trip Itinerary.

Where Should You Camp Along the Route?

Your campground should be part of the route — not something you scramble to find at the end of the day.

Vancouver Island offers provincial parks, national park camping, private campgrounds and RV parks across many of these regions.

Popular destinations can book quickly during peak periods.

Our Best Campgrounds on Vancouver Island for Campervans + RVs guide is a natural companion to this road-trip map.

When Should You Take a Vancouver Island Road Trip?

Every season changes the experience.

Summer brings long days and peak camping season.

Spring brings greener landscapes and waterfalls.

Fall brings quieter roads.

Winter brings storm watching and a moodier Pacific coast.

See our Best Time to Visit Vancouver Island for a Campervan Road Trip guide before choosing your dates.

What Should You Bring?

Less than you think.

Check what is already included with your campervan or RV rental before packing camping equipment you may not need.

Then focus on weather-appropriate clothing, personal essentials, food, water, chargers and the gear required for the activities you actually plan to do.

See our Vancouver Island Campervan Packing List: What You Actually Need for the complete checklist.

Build Your Own Vancouver Island Road Trip Map

Here is the most important part of this guide:

You do not have to follow it.

Use these routes as building blocks.

Maybe you only want Tofino.

Maybe you want two weeks north.

Maybe the weather changes and you abandon the west coast for the east.

Maybe you discover somewhere you had never heard of and stay another night.

That flexibility is exactly what makes traveling Vancouver Island by campervan or RV different.

The map gives you possibilities.

The road decides the rest.
