Vancouver Island Road Trip Stops You Will Be Glad You Did Not Drive Past

The Best Part of a Vancouver Island Road Trip Is Not Always Where You Are Going

Sometimes it is the beach you almost drove past.

The trail you noticed from the highway.

The tiny community where you only planned to stop for coffee.

Or the viewpoint that was supposed to take five minutes and somehow became an hour.

There are obvious destinations on almost every Vancouver Island itinerary — Tofino, Victoria, Nanaimo, Ucluelet and Campbell River among them.

Go there.

But if you are exploring Vancouver Island by campervan, motorhome, RV or car, leave room for everything in between.

Because some of the best Vancouver Island road trip stops are the ones you did not originally put on the itinerary.

Neck Point Park | Nanaimo

If Nanaimo is where your Vancouver Island road trip begins, you do not have to travel very far before making your first stop.

Neck Point Park sits along Nanaimo’s coastline with walking trails, rocky shoreline, beaches and expansive views across the Salish Sea.

It is the kind of place that works whether you have twenty minutes or an entire afternoon.

And it is a good introduction to something you will discover repeatedly while travelling Vancouver Island:

You are rarely very far from somewhere worth stopping.

Rathtrevor Beach | Parksville

Drive north from Nanaimo and Parksville quickly brings you to one of Vancouver Island’s most recognizable stretches of shoreline.

Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park is especially interesting at low tide, when the ocean can retreat dramatically and expose a huge expanse of sand.

It is easy to make Parksville somewhere you simply drive through on the way north.

Do not.

Check the tide. Get out. Walk.

Sometimes the detour is only a few kilometres.

Coombs | Goats, Markets + a Vancouver Island Classic

Yes, there really are goats on the roof.

Coombs has become one of those wonderfully unusual Vancouver Island road trip stops that first-time visitors often remember long after the trip ends.

The Old Country Market is the famous attraction, but the broader Coombs area makes an easy detour when travelling between Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum Beach and the routes leading toward Port Alberni and the west coast.

It is quirky.

It is unmistakably Vancouver Island.

And that is precisely why it belongs on a road trip.

Cathedral Grove | MacMillan Provincial Park

If you are travelling between the east and west coasts of Vancouver Island, this is one of those places where driving past would be a mistake.

Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Provincial Park is home to towering old-growth Douglas fir trees, with trails running through forest on both sides of the highway.

You do not need an entire day.

You just need enough time to get out of the vehicle and look up.

A road trip feels different when some of the things surrounding the highway have been standing there for hundreds of years.

Port Alberni | Do Not Treat It as Just the Road to Tofino

A lot of Vancouver Island visitors encounter Port Alberni because they are heading somewhere else.

Usually Tofino or Ucluelet.

That makes it easy to mentally classify the community as part of the drive rather than part of the trip.

Give it another look.

Port Alberni sits at the head of the Alberni Inlet and can be a useful place to stop, eat, explore and experience another side of Vancouver Island before continuing toward the Pacific.

The destination does not always begin when you reach the ocean.

Ucluelet | Slow Down Before Tofino

If Tofino is circled on your map, make sure Ucluelet is not merely something you pass on the way there.

This west coast community has its own personality and provides access to dramatic coastline, trails, beaches and Pacific Ocean scenery.

Walk part of the Wild Pacific Trail.

Watch the waves.

Stay longer than you intended.

Tofino may receive more international attention, but Vancouver Island’s west coast experience extends well beyond one community.

Pacific Rim | Stop Between Ucluelet + Tofino

The road between Ucluelet and Tofino is not dead space between two destinations.

It is part of the destination.

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve occupies an extraordinary stretch of Vancouver Island’s west coast, with beaches, rainforest and access points that can turn the relatively short drive between the communities into an entire day of exploration.

If you see somewhere you want to stop, stop.

That is what the road trip is for.

Qualicum Beach | Take the Coastal Route

There are times when getting somewhere faster makes sense.

A Vancouver Island road trip is not always one of them.

Qualicum Beach is a good reminder to occasionally choose the road that stays closer to the water.

Stop for lunch. Walk along the waterfront. Watch the Salish Sea for a while.

Then keep going.

You do not need every stop to be an attraction.

Sometimes a place simply needs to feel good enough to stay awhile.

Little Qualicum Falls | Follow the Sign

One of the advantages of travelling Vancouver Island by road is how quickly the landscape can change.

Coastline becomes forest.

Communities disappear behind you.

And suddenly a roadside sign is pointing toward waterfalls.

Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park offers forest trails and views of waterfalls and the river cutting through the rocky landscape.

It is exactly the kind of place that rewards leaving some space in the itinerary.

Comox Valley | Give Yourself More Than a Fuel Stop

Courtenay, Comox and the surrounding Comox Valley deserve more than a quick pass on the way to Campbell River.

Beaches, mountains, food, trails and coastal scenery all converge here, making the area an easy place to accidentally spend considerably longer than planned.

Which, on a good road trip, is usually a positive sign.

Campbell River | Where the Island Starts Feeling Different

Keep travelling north and Vancouver Island begins changing again.

Campbell River sits between the mountains and the ocean and is widely used as a jumping-off point for outdoor adventures, wildlife experiences and travel farther north.

For some travellers, it will be the destination.

For others, it is where the next part begins.

Because Vancouver Island does not end at Campbell River.

Keep Going North

This may be one of the most important Vancouver Island road trip suggestions we can give you:

Do not assume you have reached the end just because most itineraries stop mentioning what comes next.

Northern Vancouver Island becomes progressively quieter, more remote and very different from the Island’s busier southern communities.

If you have the time, keep looking at the map.

There is always another road.

Or Turn South From Nanaimo

Not every great Vancouver Island road trip heads toward Tofino or north.

Travel south from Nanaimo and another network of possibilities opens.

The Cowichan Valley, Duncan, Chemainus, Victoria, Sooke and Port Renfrew can all become part of a southern Vancouver Island route.

And once again, the places between the recognizable names matter.

Small communities. Beaches. Forest roads. Cafes. Viewpoints. Trailheads.

The Island rewards curiosity.

Leave Space Between the Stops

It is tempting to build a Vancouver Island itinerary like a checklist.

9:00 — beach.

10:30 — waterfall.

12:00 — lunch.

1:30 — forest.

3:00 — next destination.

You can travel that way.

But you might miss the point.

A road trip gives you something other kinds of travel cannot:

the ability to change your mind.

Stay another hour.

Turn down the road because the sign looks interesting.

Skip something because you found somewhere better.

Stop because the light looks incredible.

Some structure makes a road trip work.

Too much structure can prevent it from becoming one.

Campervan, Motorhome, RV or Car: The Road Is Part of the Trip

How you travel also changes how you experience Vancouver Island.

A campervan can give you a smaller, nimble setup for exploring the Island from the road.

A motorhome can provide additional living space for longer trips, families and travellers looking for more room.

The broader range of RV rentals on Vancouver Island creates even more ways to build a road trip around camping and outdoor travel.

A car combined with hotels, cabins or other accommodation creates another experience entirely.

There is no single correct way to explore Vancouver Island.

The important part is giving yourself enough freedom to actually explore it.

Start Your Vancouver Island Road Trip in Nanaimo

Nanaimo’s central location makes it a natural starting point for road trips in almost every direction.

Go west toward Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino.

Go north toward Parksville, Qualicum Beach, the Comox Valley, Campbell River and beyond.

Go south toward Cowichan, Victoria, Sooke and Port Renfrew.

Or build a route connecting several of them.

JUSTGO connects travellers with Vancouver Island travel ideas, road trip inspiration, original travel media and campervan, RV and motorhome rental options for experiencing more of the Island from the road.

But wherever you decide to go, remember:

The destination is only part of the trip.

Leave room for the beach you almost drove past.

The trail you did not know existed.

The coffee stop that became lunch.

The sunset that changed the schedule.

Those are the stops you remember.

Choose a direction. JUSTGO.
