Seven days. One campervan. An entire island waiting.
A Vancouver Island campervan road trip gives you something a traditional vacation rarely does: the ability to wake up somewhere beautiful and decide what happens next.
Ocean one day. Rainforest the next. Mountains, beaches, waterfalls and small coastal towns somewhere in between.
If you have one week to explore, this 7-day Vancouver Island campervan road trip itinerary gives you a starting route without turning the adventure into a schedule.
Pick up your campervan around Nanaimo.
Pack your favourite food.
And just go.
Day 1: Nanaimo → Parksville + Qualicum Beach
Approximate driving: 30–60 minutes, plus exploring
Start easy.
After picking up your campervan in the Nanaimo area, head north toward Parksville and Qualicum Beach.
Walk the shoreline around Parksville, explore Rathtrevor Beach or continue toward Qualicum Beach.
If you have time, head inland toward Englishman River Falls or Little Qualicum Falls.
Then find your campground, settle in and have your first dinner outside.
Do not rush Day 1.
The point is to stop traveling to Vancouver Island and start experiencing it.
Day 2: Parksville → Cathedral Grove → Port Alberni → Ucluelet
Approximate driving: 3 hours, excluding stops
Now head west.
Take Highway 4 toward Cathedral Grove, where enormous old-growth Douglas fir trees create one of the most memorable roadside stops on Vancouver Island.
Continue through Port Alberni.
Have extra time? Stop around Sproat Lake before continuing toward the west coast.
The road becomes increasingly dramatic as you travel through mountains, forests and lakes toward Ucluelet.
Spend the night around Ucluelet or Pacific Rim.
Day 3: Ucluelet + Pacific Rim
Today, barely drive at all.
Explore Ucluelet, walk part of the Wild Pacific Trail and then make your way into Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.
Stop at the beaches.
Walk through the rainforest.
Find somewhere for coffee.
Watch the Pacific.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make on a Vancouver Island road trip is spending the entire trip behind the windshield.
Today is for getting out of the van.
Day 4: Pacific Rim → Tofino
Approximate driving: very little — intentionally
Head north toward Tofino, but make the journey last all day.
Explore Long Beach and the surrounding Pacific Rim coastline before continuing toward town.
Depending on the season and conditions, you might surf, walk Chesterman Beach, explore Tofino or simply find somewhere to watch the waves.
This is also a good place to leave room in the itinerary.
If the weather is incredible, stay outside.
If it rains?
Welcome to the west coast.
Day 5: Tofino → Nanaimo → Cowichan Valley
Approximate driving: 4–5 hours
Time to cross the Island again.
Leave Tofino and retrace Highway 4 toward the east coast, stopping anywhere you missed on the journey west.
Once you reach Nanaimo, continue south toward Ladysmith, Chemainus, Duncan and the Cowichan Valley.
This part of Vancouver Island feels completely different from Tofino.
Explore small communities, farms, forests and lakes before camping somewhere around the Cowichan region.
It is a longer driving day, so give yourself plenty of time.
Day 6: Cowichan Valley → Victoria → Sooke
Approximate driving: 2–3 hours, depending on your route
Continue south toward Victoria.
Spend part of the day exploring BC’s capital before heading west toward Sooke.
As the city disappears behind you, the coastline becomes increasingly rugged.
If time allows, continue toward French Beach or farther along the Juan de Fuca coast.
Ocean.
Forest.
Another campfire.
Completely different Vancouver Island.
Day 7: Sooke → Nanaimo
Approximate driving: 2–3 hours
Your final day takes you back toward Nanaimo.
But there is no reason to make it a straight drive.
Depending on your timing, stop around Goldstream Provincial Park, explore more of the Cowichan Valley or take your time through the communities along the way.
Then return to Nanaimo.
Seven days later, you have crossed Vancouver Island twice, explored both coasts and experienced beaches, rainforest, mountains, waterfalls and communities that all feel completely different from one another.
And you still have not seen most of the Island.

What Should You Pack for a Vancouver Island Campervan Road Trip?
Prepare for Vancouver Island weather to change.
Even during warmer months, coastal mornings and evenings can be cool, while west coast weather can shift quickly.
Bring comfortable layers, rain gear, walking shoes, food and water, charging cables and whatever you need for the activities you have planned.
But do not overpack.
Part of campervan travel is realizing how little you actually need.
Can You Explore Vancouver Island in Seven Days?
Absolutely.
But do not try to see everything.
Vancouver Island is much larger than many first-time visitors expect, and packing too many destinations into seven days turns an adventure into a driving marathon.
This itinerary deliberately concentrates on central, western and southern Vancouver Island.
Northern Vancouver Island deserves another road trip entirely.
Start Your Vancouver Island Campervan Road Trip From Nanaimo
Nanaimo makes an ideal launch point because you arrive near the middle of Vancouver Island rather than at one extreme.
From here:
West → Tofino + Ucluelet
North → Parksville + Campbell River
South → Cowichan Valley + Victoria + Sooke
Your route can become a loop instead of a return journey.
And if something along the way changes the plan?
Good.
That is exactly the point.
Seven Days. Your Route. Your Vancouver Island.
You do not need to experience everything.
You just need to start.
