Campervan and RV Rentals Nanaimo | JUSTGO Vans

The Nanaimo to Tofino road trip is one of those drives where getting there is every bit as good as the destination.

Starting in Nanaimo, the route takes you from Vancouver Island’s east coast through old-growth forests, mountain landscapes and lakes before reaching the wild beaches and Pacific coastline of Tofino and Ucluelet.

You could drive straight through.

But where is the fun in that?

With a campervan or RV, you have the freedom to slow down, explore along the way and turn the drive itself into part of your Vancouver Island adventure.

Starting Your Road Trip in Nanaimo

Nanaimo makes an ideal starting point for a campervan trip to Vancouver Island’s west coast.

After picking up your campervan or RV, head north toward Parksville before turning west onto Highway 4 toward Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino.

From there, the landscape changes quickly.

Cities disappear. Mountains get bigger. Forests get thicker.

And Vancouver Island starts showing off.

Stop at Coombs

Before heading across the island, make a stop in Coombs.

The small community is famous for the Old Country Market and its goats on the roof, but it is also an easy place to grab food, coffee and road-trip supplies before heading farther west.

Then keep going toward one of Vancouver Island’s most iconic forests.

Walk Beneath the Trees at Cathedral Grove

Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Provincial Park is an easy stop along the Nanaimo-to-Tofino route and home to towering old-growth Douglas fir trees.

Get out of the van. Stretch your legs. Walk beneath trees that have been standing for centuries.

It is exactly the kind of place that makes driving across Vancouver Island different from simply trying to reach the next destination.

Port Alberni and Sproat Lake

Continue west and you will reach Port Alberni, roughly halfway between Nanaimo and the Pacific coast.

This is another good opportunity to refuel, grab supplies or stop for lunch.

Nearby Sproat Lake is worth the detour when you have time.

On a warm Vancouver Island day, clear water surrounded by mountains and forest makes a pretty convincing argument for not rushing to Tofino.

The Drive Toward the West Coast

Past Port Alberni, Highway 4 becomes part of the adventure.

The road winds through mountains, forests and remote stretches of Vancouver Island before eventually reaching the junction where you choose:

Ucluelet or Tofino?

Our answer?

Both.

Explore Ucluelet

Turn south and explore Ucluelet, a smaller west coast community surrounded by rugged shoreline and rainforest.

Walk sections of the Wild Pacific Trail, explore the coastline or simply slow things down for an afternoon.

Ucluelet has a different energy than Tofino and deserves to be more than somewhere you drive past.

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

Between Ucluelet and Tofino lies one of the highlights of the entire trip: Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

This stretch of Vancouver Island brings together rainforest, enormous beaches and the raw Pacific Ocean.

Stop. Walk. Explore.

You have a campervan.

There is no hotel check-in waiting for you.

Long Beach

You cannot really do a Nanaimo to Tofino road trip without experiencing Long Beach.

Walk the shoreline. Watch the surfers. Stay for sunset. Come back when the weather completely changes the personality of the coast.

This is exactly why exploring Vancouver Island by campervan works so well.

Your plans can change with the island.

Finally, Tofino

And then there is Tofino.

Surf. Beaches. Rainforest. Food. Storm watching. Sunsets. Wildlife. Ocean air.

Tofino may be the destination that convinced you to make the trip, but after driving from Nanaimo, you will probably realize that the places between the two were part of the reason for coming too.

How Long Should You Spend on a Nanaimo to Tofino Road Trip?

You can make the drive in a day, but that misses the point.

Give yourself several days if you can.

Spend time exploring along Highway 4. Stay near Ucluelet. Give yourself a full beach day. Wake up without knowing exactly what you are doing that afternoon.

A Vancouver Island campervan road trip gets considerably better when there is room for the unexpected.

Explore Vancouver Island by Campervan or RV

The road between Nanaimo and Tofino is only one piece of Vancouver Island.

Start from Nanaimo and you can also travel north toward Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Courtenay and Campbell River or head south toward Duncan, Cowichan Valley, Sooke and Victoria.

The van gives you somewhere to sleep.

Vancouver Island gives you somewhere to go.
