The Road Was Always the Story: How JUSTGO Built Media Into the Experience
Before JUSTGO® became a growing Vancouver Island travel and media ecosystem, there was a campervan, a camera and a simple instinct:
Go somewhere worth discovering — and tell the story.
When JUSTGO began on Vancouver Island in 2017, its original Volkswagen Westfalia campervans provided something tangible: a way for people to get out on the road and experience the Island.
But something else was happening at the same time.
The trips were generating stories.
The stories were generating photographs and video.
Travellers were documenting their own experiences.
Destinations were becoming content.
And every adventure created another opportunity for someone else to discover what was out there.
For JUSTGO and BizBOXTV® founder Lisa Ostrikoff, media wasn’t something that appeared later as a marketing strategy for the campervan business.
Media was embedded in how the experience was documented and shared from the beginning.
Before JUSTGO, There Was Media
Ostrikoff’s professional background was already rooted in storytelling.
Years spent working in television news as a videographer, reporter, anchor and news director had shaped the way she looked at businesses, people and places.
Through BizBOXTV, that thinking moved into digital media.
Then came JUSTGO.
In May 2017, Ostrikoff spotted a 1982 Volkswagen Westfalia while travelling through Duncan on the way to Victoria.
She bought it.
Within weeks, JUSTGO Campervan Rentals Inc. was born.
A second vintage Westfalia followed, then others, eventually creating JUSTGO’s original fleet of Volkswagen campervans.
But Ostrikoff wasn’t only looking at vehicles.
She was looking through a camera.
“My instinct has always been to find the story. JUSTGO suddenly gave me an endless supply of them. Every time we went somewhere, met someone or discovered another part of Vancouver Island, there was something new to capture.”
- Lisa Ostrikoff, Founder, JUSTGO® + BizBOXTV®
That distinction would become increasingly important.
The Road Became the Content
Vancouver Island supplied an extraordinary environment for storytelling.
Beaches.
Forests.
Ferries.
Campgrounds.
Small communities.
Mountain roads.
Pacific sunsets.
Unexpected wildlife.
And hundreds of places that could easily be missed unless someone showed you they were there.
JUSTGO’s original campervan experiences created a reason to move through that environment.
Media created a way to document what happened.
A single trip could produce photographs, videos, destination discoveries, traveller stories and social content.
Then another trip would produce something completely different.
The road became an ongoing source of original media.
“The vehicle could facilitate the experience, but what fascinated me was everything happening around the experience — where people went, what they discovered, what they photographed and what they wanted to tell other people about.”
That idea extends well beyond campervans.
It is fundamentally about travel, discovery and storytelling.
The Experience and the Media Reinforced Each Other
Traditional marketing often follows a predictable sequence.
Create a product.
Then figure out how to advertise it.
JUSTGO developed differently.
The experience itself continually supplied the material for storytelling.
Someone went somewhere.
Something happened.
Someone captured it.
JUSTGO shared it.
Someone else discovered it.
And eventually, another person went somewhere.
The cycle looked something like this:
EXPERIENCE → MEDIA → DISCOVERY → EXPERIENCE
The physical experience and the digital story reinforced one another.
But they performed different roles.
The experience happened in a particular place and time.
Media allowed that experience to travel.
“A trip ends. A photograph doesn’t. A video doesn’t. A story can continue reaching people years after the original experience happened.”
— Lisa Ostrikoff
Today, the JUSTGO archive itself demonstrates that principle.
Media created years ago can still introduce someone to a Vancouver Island destination, inspire a road trip or provide a glimpse into the history of the brand.
The Audience Was Never Limited to Renters
One of the most important realizations was that the audience for the stories could be much larger than the audience for any individual travel experience.
Someone didn’t have to rent an original JUSTGO Westfalia to enjoy watching it travel around Vancouver Island.
They didn’t need to be planning a campervan trip to discover a beach, campground, business or destination through JUSTGO.
They could simply follow.
Watch.
Discover.
Save something for later.
Send a place to a friend.
Or decide they wanted to experience Vancouver Island differently the next time they travelled.
That creates a fundamentally different relationship with an audience.
The experience may attract a customer.
The media can attract a community.
And communities aren’t constrained by the number of vehicles available on a particular day.
The Bigger Opportunity Was Media + Discovery
As the JUSTGO media library grew, so did the range of stories available to tell.
The subject didn’t have to be a campervan.
It could be a campground.
A beach.
A local business.
A community.
A road.
A person.
A destination.
An unusual place to stay.
A wildlife encounter.
Or simply something happening somewhere on Vancouver Island that was worth seeing.
The common denominator wasn’t a particular vehicle.
It was discovery.
That is an important distinction in understanding the broader JUSTGO vision.
JUSTGO could create and distribute media around travel experiences without needing to own the physical asset being documented.
A destination doesn’t need to belong to JUSTGO to become part of a JUSTGO travel story.
Neither does a campground, hotel, restaurant, attraction, tour, rental vehicle or local business.
They can be subjects of media and discovery.
The media system surrounding those stories is a separate layer.
From Campervan Content to Vancouver Island Travel Media
Over time, this opened a much larger possibility.
What if JUSTGO wasn’t limited to telling stories about its own original campervan experiences?
What if the same media approach could help people discover Vancouver Island itself?
That creates an almost unlimited editorial landscape.
Original travel videos.
Destination guides.
Road-trip content.
Camping information.
Local businesses.
Community stories.
Live views.
Social media.
Traveller contributions.
Photography.
Places to stay.
Things to do.
And the people behind all of them.
The original campervan experiences demonstrated the model.
The media vision could scale far beyond them.
The Rise of JUSTGO Community Media
There was another source of media developing alongside JUSTGO’s professionally created content.
The travellers themselves.
People photographed their trips.
They documented campsites.
They captured the vans.
They shared beaches, forests, ferry rides, meals, dogs, families, friends and countless moments from the road.
Some of that media came back to JUSTGO.
Years later, those individual pieces collectively form something much more interesting than a conventional collection of customer photos.
They form a living community archive.
That history is now becoming part of JUSTGO Community Media and the growing JUSTGO #FAM.
“I love professional storytelling, but I’ve always loved seeing what comes back from people even more. Everyone notices something different. Put all of those perspectives together and suddenly you’re documenting Vancouver Island in a way one media team never could.”
— Lisa Ostrikoff
The audience isn’t merely consuming the media.
Sometimes, the audience becomes part of creating it.
The Media Layer Can Connect Many Experiences
This is where the larger JUSTGO model becomes particularly interesting.
A travel media and discovery network does not need to own everything it covers.
Media networks routinely connect audiences with experiences created by many independent people and businesses.
JUSTGO can tell the story.
Another business can provide the experience.
A traveller can contribute another perspective.
A destination provides the setting.
The audience decides where to go next.
Those are distinct roles.
And that allows the media ecosystem to become larger than any single product, vehicle, operator or destination.
The scalable asset is the ability to create discovery around what is worth experiencing.
Why Original Media Matters More Now
That idea has taken on another dimension as artificial intelligence makes synthetic content increasingly easy to produce.
Almost any imagined travel scene can now be generated.
A campervan beside an ocean.
A perfect campsite.
A dramatic sunset.
A pristine beach.
But JUSTGO’s historical archive represents something different.
Those experiences happened.
People actually went there.
The photographs document real trips.
The videos capture real places.
The traveller stories came from real experiences.
That gives original media another kind of value: provenance.
“AI makes it possible to generate almost anything we can imagine. I think that’s going to make documented reality increasingly interesting. Original media can say: this wasn’t imagined. Somebody was actually here.”
The Original Vision Is Becoming Bigger
Looking back at JUSTGO’s history, the campervans remain an important part of the story.
They helped create the original experiences.
They travelled across Vancouver Island.
They appeared throughout the earliest JUSTGO media.
They connected people with places.
And they helped demonstrate something much larger:
Real-world experiences can become powerful media engines.
But the principle was never confined to one vehicle.
Or one fleet.
Or even campervan travel.
It was about what happens when experience, storytelling, distribution and discovery begin working together.
Today that idea is becoming more visible through the expanding JUSTGO Media Network, JUSTGO Community Media, Vancouver Island travel content and the growing collection of stories being created across the Island.
The road was the beginning.
The stories made it travel.
And nearly a decade later, there is still something else out there worth discovering.
