1. Long Beach — Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

Stretching along the west coast between Tofino and Ucluelet, Long Beach is one of the most iconic beaches on Vancouver Island.

The massive stretch of sand, Pacific surf and surrounding rainforest make it a must-stop on almost any Tofino road trip.

Walk the beach, watch surfers, catch a west coast sunset or experience an entirely different side of the coastline during storm season.

Location: Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, between Tofino and Ucluelet.

2. Chesterman Beach — Tofino

Chesterman Beach delivers the classic Tofino experience: expansive sand, dramatic skies, rolling Pacific waves and incredible sunsets.

It’s popular with surfers, beach walkers and photographers, and its proximity to Tofino makes it easy to include during a west coast stay.

Location: Tofino.

3. Cox Bay Beach — Tofino

If surfing is part of your Vancouver Island bucket list, Cox Bay deserves a stop.

The wide sandy beach is surrounded by forest and exposed to the open Pacific, creating some of the area’s most impressive surf and storm-watching conditions.

Even if you never touch a surfboard, it’s worth visiting just for the scenery.

Location: Tofino.

4. Rathtrevor Beach — Parksville

Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park offers a completely different Vancouver Island beach experience.

At low tide, the ocean can retreat hundreds of metres across the sandy shoreline. During warmer months, the shallow water over the heated sand can make swimming surprisingly comfortable by Vancouver Island standards.

The adjacent campground also makes Rathtrevor an excellent stop on a Vancouver Island campervan or RV road trip.

Location: Parksville.

5. Tribune Bay — Hornby Island

Often recognized for its beautiful sandy shoreline and striking blue-green water, Tribune Bay is one of the beaches that makes Hornby Island feel distinctly different from much of Vancouver Island.

Getting there requires an additional ferry journey, but that’s part of the adventure.

Location: Hornby Island.

6. Botanical Beach — Port Renfrew

Botanical Beach isn’t your traditional sandy swimming beach — and that’s exactly why it belongs on this list.

Located near Port Renfrew, the shoreline is famous for rocky formations and intertidal marine life visible during appropriate low-tide conditions.

Check tide conditions before visiting and avoid disturbing or removing marine life.

Location: Port Renfrew.

7. China Beach — Juan de Fuca

China Beach combines a forest hike with a beautiful stretch of Vancouver Island’s southwest coastline.

It’s one of several worthwhile stops along Highway 14 between Sooke and Port Renfrew and fits perfectly into a Pacific Marine Circle Route road trip.

Location: Juan de Fuca Provincial Park.

8. French Beach — Near Sooke

French Beach offers rugged shoreline, views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca and easy access from the highway.

It’s also home to a provincial park campground, making it particularly useful for travellers exploring southern Vancouver Island by campervan or RV.

Location: Between Sooke and Jordan River.

9. Qualicum Beach

For a relaxed central Vancouver Island beach day, Qualicum Beach is hard to beat.

Its long shoreline and waterfront community make it an easy stop while travelling between Nanaimo, Parksville and destinations farther north.

Pair it with Parksville for an easy Oceanside road-trip day.

Location: Qualicum Beach.

10. Departure Bay Beach — Nanaimo

You don’t have to travel far from Nanaimo to find the ocean.

Departure Bay offers waterfront views, beach access and an easy place to experience Vancouver Island’s coastal lifestyle right in the city.

It’s also conveniently located for travellers arriving through the nearby BC Ferries terminal.

Location: Nanaimo.

11. Neck Point Park — Nanaimo

Neck Point Park combines beaches, rocky coves, forest trails and expansive ocean views.

Rather than one enormous sandy beach, you’ll find multiple coastal areas to explore along the park’s trail network.

Keep an eye on the water, too — Vancouver Island’s coastline is home to an incredible variety of marine wildlife.

Location: Nanaimo.

12. Willows Beach — Victoria

Located in Oak Bay, Willows Beach provides a beautiful stretch of shoreline close to downtown Victoria.

On a clear day, the beach offers expansive views across the water and makes an easy addition to a Victoria sightseeing day.

Location: Oak Bay, Victoria.

Turn the Beach List Into a Vancouver Island Road Trip

The best part?

You don’t have to choose just one.

A Vancouver Island road trip can connect several completely different coastal environments in a single journey.

Start around Nanaimo, Parksville and Qualicum Beach, head west through Cathedral Grove toward Tofino and Ucluelet, or travel south through Victoria, Sooke and Port Renfrew.

Travelling by campervan or RV gives you the freedom to make the coastline part of the journey rather than simply the destination.

Before heading out, check current park access, ferry schedules, tides, road conditions and campground availability — particularly when travelling to more remote areas.
