Looking for a camper on Vancouver Island?
You will quickly discover that “camper” can mean a lot of different things.
Campervans. VW campers. Camping vans. Class B vans. Motorhomes. RVs. Truck campers. Jeep + rooftop tent campers.
They all offer a different way to explore Vancouver Island — and the right one depends on how you want to travel.
JUSTGO began with campervans and years spent exploring Vancouver Island from the road. Since 2017, those adventures have taken us through coastal communities, campgrounds, forests, beaches and road-trip routes across the Island while creating thousands of pieces of original travel media along the way.
So if you are searching for Vancouver Island campers, here is a simple guide to understanding your options — and choosing the kind of camper that fits your trip.
What Does “Camper” Actually Mean?
“Camper” is one of those wonderfully vague travel words.
Someone searching for a camper rental might be picturing a vintage Volkswagen Westfalia.
Someone else might mean a modern campervan with a kitchen and sleeping area.
Another traveller may be looking for a larger RV or motorhome with more living space and amenities.
Generally, a camper is a vehicle or towable unit designed to combine transportation or mobility with somewhere to sleep and live while travelling.
For a Vancouver Island road trip, the most common options include campervans, Class B camper vans, motorhomes, RVs, truck campers and travel trailers.
The experience can be dramatically different depending on which one you choose.
Campervans: Small Vehicle, Big Vancouver Island Adventure
There is a reason campervans and Vancouver Island fit together so naturally.
They are generally smaller and easier to manoeuvre than larger RVs while still giving you somewhere to sleep, carry your gear and make a temporary home on the road.
That can be particularly useful on an Island where part of the experience is moving between very different places.
One day you might be exploring around Nanaimo or Parksville.
The next morning you could be driving west toward Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino.
Or you might point north toward the Comox Valley, Campbell River and eventually Northern Vancouver Island.
For travellers who want the road trip itself to be part of the adventure, a campervan can offer a lot of flexibility.

VW Campers + the Classic Westfalia Experience
Long before #vanlife became a social media phenomenon, Volkswagen campers were already taking people on road trips.
Vintage VW Westfalias became an important part of the early JUSTGO story too.
Original JUSTGO campers including Olive, Goldie and Luna travelled across Vancouver Island with travellers from around the world, becoming part of years of road trips, photographs, videos and memories.
A vintage VW camper is not necessarily the right choice for every traveller. Older vehicles can offer a very different driving and camping experience than modern campervans.
But there is something unmistakable about travelling Vancouver Island in one.
The vehicle becomes part of the adventure.

Campervan vs RV: What Is the Difference?
This is one of the most common points of confusion when people start researching campers on Vancouver Island.
A campervan is technically part of the broader recreational vehicle world, but people commonly use the terms differently when searching for rentals.
A campervan is generally van-sized and designed around compact travel and sleeping.
An RV is a much broader term that can include campervans, motorhomes, travel trailers and other recreational vehicles.
For travellers, the more useful question is not really What is technically an RV?
It is:
How much vehicle do you actually want to travel with?
If you prioritize mobility, simplicity and a smaller footprint, a campervan may make sense.
If you want considerably more interior space, amenities and living room, a larger RV or motorhome may suit your trip better.
Campervan vs Motorhome: Which Is Better for Vancouver Island? →
Motorhomes: More Room for the Road
For families, groups or travellers who simply want more space, a motorhome rental on Vancouver Island can offer a very different experience.
Motorhomes typically provide more substantial sleeping arrangements, living space and onboard amenities than smaller campers.
The trade-off is size.
Vancouver Island’s major highways and many established campgrounds can accommodate motorhomes, but a larger vehicle changes how you approach parking, narrow roads, campground selection and spontaneous stops.
That does not make one option better than another.
It makes them different kinds of trips.

Where Can You Take a Camper on Vancouver Island?
This is where the fun starts.
Vancouver Island stretches for hundreds of kilometres, and every direction creates a different road trip.
Starting around the Nanaimo area puts travellers in a particularly useful position because Central Vancouver Island gives you several very different directions to explore.
Head West
Travel through Port Alberni toward Ucluelet and Tofino for Pacific beaches, rainforest, surfing, hiking and the unmistakable atmosphere of Vancouver Island’s west coast.
Head North
Explore Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Courtenay, Comox and Campbell River, then continue toward Northern Vancouver Island if time allows.
Head South
Travel through Ladysmith and the Cowichan Valley toward Victoria, or turn west toward Sooke, Jordan River and Port Renfrew.
Or do something completely different.

Where Can You Camp on Vancouver Island?
Having a camper does not mean you can simply park anywhere overnight.
Camping rules vary depending on the land, municipality, campground and location.
Vancouver Island offers a mixture of provincial parks, private campgrounds, recreation sites and other designated camping opportunities.
Popular areas can become extremely busy during summer, particularly around destinations such as Tofino, Ucluelet and major provincial parks.
If you are travelling during peak season, planning important overnight stops ahead of time can make the road trip much easier.
Then leave some flexibility between them.

When Is the Best Time for a Vancouver Island Camper Trip?
There really is not one Vancouver Island camping season.
There are four very different ones.
Summer brings long days, warmer weather and the greatest selection of seasonal experiences — along with the largest crowds and strongest demand for campsites.
Spring can mean quieter roads, changing weather, waterfalls and the beginning of the main camping season.
Fall brings cooler evenings, changing forests and fewer peak-season crowds in many areas.
Winter is a completely different Vancouver Island experience. Coastal storms, rain, mountain snow and shorter daylight hours require considerably more planning, but year-round travel is possible in appropriate vehicles and locations.
The best time depends on the Vancouver Island experience you actually want.

What Should You Look for When Renting a Camper?
The prettiest camper is not necessarily the right camper.
Before booking, think about how many people are travelling, where everyone will sleep, how comfortable you are driving a larger vehicle, what cooking facilities you need, how much gear you are carrying and where you expect to camp.
Also look carefully at what the rental actually includes.
Mileage policies, insurance, bedding, kitchen equipment, roadside assistance, minimum rental periods, pet policies and additional fees can vary considerably between operators and vehicles.
A great camper should fit the trip rather than forcing the trip to fit the camper.
Renting a Camper Around Nanaimo
For travellers arriving on Vancouver Island, the Nanaimo area can be an excellent starting point for a camper trip.
BC Ferries connects the Nanaimo area with the Lower Mainland, while travellers flying into the region can also begin their trip on Central Vancouver Island.
More importantly, Nanaimo puts you near the middle of many of the Island’s major road-trip directions.
You are not committed to immediately travelling north or south.
You can choose.
West toward Tofino.
North toward Campbell River.
South toward Victoria.
Or somewhere you had not planned on going at all.
That freedom is part of what camper travel does particularly well.
